Severe Dust Storm Warning Issued for Midland: Hazardous Conditions Expected

MIDLAND, TX – A severe dust storm is currently sweeping through Midland and surrounding areas today, Tuesday, March 18, 2025. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Midland has issued a Dust Storm Warning in effect until 9:45 PM CDT, warning of dangerous conditions including reduced visibility and high winds.
At 8:12 PM CDT, a dust channel was observed moving northeast at 30 mph, causing visibility to drop below a quarter mile. Winds exceeding 50 mph are expected to continue impacting the region.

The dust storm is affecting multiple counties, including:

• Ector County
• Andrews County (Eastern)
• Ward County (Northeastern)
• Martin County
• Crane County
• Dawson County (Southern)
• Upton County (Northern)
Impacted Locations:
Cities and towns experiencing the worst conditions include:
• Midland
• Odessa
• Stanton
• Lenorah
• Crane
• Penwell
• Ackerly
• West Odessa
• Tarzan
• Greenwood
• Andrews
• Midkiff
• Goldsmith
Additionally, Midland International Air and Space Port and Midland Airpark are under the storm’s effects, which could cause travel delays.
Precautionary & Safety Measures:
The NWS urges residents to take immediate precautions:
• Drivers: Avoid travel unless necessary. If driving in low visibility, pull over, turn off your lights, and wait for conditions to improve. Do not stop on the roadway.
• Residents: Stay indoors with windows and doors shut. Avoid outdoor activities that expose you to dust inhalation.
• Health Risks: People with respiratory issues, asthma, or heart conditions should take extra precautions due to poor air quality.
Red Flag Warning: Extreme Fire Danger
In addition to the dust storm, a Red Flag Warning is in effect until 1:00 AM CDT, Wednesday, March 19. With relative humidity as low as 5%, strong westerly winds, and dry conditions, the fire risk is extremely high. Officials warn that any fires that start could spread rapidly and become uncontrollable.

• Properly extinguish smoking materials—do not discard cigarette butts outdoors.
